In My day to day on November 5, 2008 at 6:00 pm

We decided that being new to the area we should get out and meet some of the locals and what better way to do it than at a beginners curling course. Tonight was our first night and I must admit initially I was having none of it. You put a slider over one shoe and have your other one just as it is – they are then referred to as your gripper and slider!

After a wee tutorial we then warmed up before heading onto the ice to partake in drill practice. Drill-practice involved 1) making your way from one end of the rink to the other (not as easy as it sounds, but I succeeded without ending up on my ass) then 2) pushing off the hack (like a starting block) with your gripper whilst sliding on your slider with your brush held horizontally in front of you along the ice (minding your fingers in the process 3) same us number 2 but holding your brush out to the side at 45 degree angle which was perhaps easier but looked far more complicated 4) same as 3 but with the stone in your other hand! After much practice I was finally starting to get the hang of it.

Next Tuesday is rememberance day and in Canada this is marked as a holiday hence no Curling for 2 weeks but I promise to get some photos on then!

Promised photos….
